Arranging your baby's Christening

If you are thinking about arranging your child's christening, please contact us. We will be happy to explain what is involved.

Can my baby be baptised at All Saints' or St. Thomas Church?

If you live in Rettendon or Hullbridge, we are pleased to welcome an enquiry about arranging baptism (christening) for your baby or child at the relevant church. To arrange a date, please contact the Vicarage. We cannot normally baptise children whose family live outside the parish unless the parent(s) worship regularly at the church or have strong family links. There are no fees for Baptism services, although donations towards the work of the church are welcome, and a collection will be taken at the end of the service.

Baptisms may take place during the Sunday morning service (9.30 a.m. at St Thomas’ Hullbridge, or 11.15 a.m. at All Saints’, Rettendon) or after the morning service, or at other times. All dates are by arrangement with individual families, and we only have one family at each Baptism service.

Booking form for Baptism Once the date is arranged for the Baptism, please complete the booking form and return it to the Vicarage at least a month before the service.

Choosing your godparents

Each child should normally have at least three godparents: two of the same sex as the child and one of the opposite sex. There may not be more than six godparents. All godparents must be baptised (christened) and should also be confirmed. Godparents should usually be over 18 - please consult the clergy in advance if you are considering younger godparents. Details of the godparents' baptism must be provided on the application form. Unbaptised people may not stand as godparents.  Please note that services of dedication or thanksgiving conducted in some churches do not qualify as the equivalent of Christian baptism.

Baptism preparation

A week or two before the Baptism, we will arrange to meet you and your child, either in your own home or at the Vicarage. During this visit, the priest will explain the service in more detail, and answer any questions you may have. These visits are friendly, relaxed and informal, and designed to help you understand and enjoy your child's baptism.

After the Baptism

We hope that you will enjoy your child’s Baptism service, and that you will continue to worship with us so that your child becomes at home in the church. Families with young children are warmly welcome at both churches.
